This subject has been about how to teach English to the children. We have prepared things that the children must learn but It had to be through different strategies such as stories, folk tales or ICT’s.
In one hand, the most positive things have been to realize that our way to talk English to the children was not correct. The most common mistake has been to talk too much in order to explain one activity. Children need direct orders and, If we speak so many words, they will not following us.
This learning has been through practice activities. It is easier realize about the mistakes doing the activities and watching others students making mistakes and teacher correct them. For this reason, performing story tales and preparing pre-activities and post-activities has been a very positive point.
Regarding the performing of the story tale, in our case “The little red riding hood”, in the school Sagrado Corazón, It was a nice and profitable experience because of we practiced what we had learnt with real children. The most positive of this experience was do it three times because we realized mistakes that we had done and we tried to correct them in the posterior performances.
The last but not least positive aspect about this subject was has had, as a member in our team, an English native speaker. She helped us a lot in our pronunciation and we have improved our listening due to her accent. At the beginning was not easy to pick up what she was talking but now we are so sad that the subject is getting its end because now we are understanding better her and we are sure that we could learn faster if we had more time with her. And she will learn of us as well. We will miss Nancy!
In other hand, we have to point one negative aspect about this subject and it is that there is not enough time to learn and get a good base in order to teach proper English to our children. If we were English native speakers maybe it would be sufficient but not for most of us. We believe that we would need more than five subjects of this speciality to be good teachers.
